We’re specifically going to touch on these broad 4 categories, so if you’re in a rush or looking for a specific topic, feel free to jump ahead:

  • Function
  • Fit
  • Materials

Function

Everybody expects their living areas to host their ideal number of guest (or no guests). But the reality is that your interior design choices need to reflect the functional expectations of that space. Party of 20 in a dining room made for 4? Sure! But don’t expect everyone to eat at once. Choosing the right furnishings in 2022 will be focused more on function than anything else. Since we’ve been forced to stay home, this has influenced designers to think more about how to utilize a fixed amount of space while maximizing the possibilities. A good rule of thumb is to start of your design by the maximum number of occupants expected, and then plan from there. Will you need smaller furnishings to accommodate a larger party? Do you really need a couch that seat’s 10 in a living room designed for 2? Be sure to ask yourself these critical questions when considering updating your room.

Fit

All sorts of trends are coming back this year, one in particular is the CottageCore trend. This focuses on creating a living space around the nostalgic countryside by using floral patterns and earthy colors from your surroundings. Shopping for antiquities are a great way to get ahead of the trend this year as many professional and amateur designers will be headed to the open markets, looking for deals on furnishings and art that reflect the countryside theme. Making use of nooks and other small spaces will also be a focus of this trend.

Materials

We love playing with materials and experimenting with new ideas, but the trend this year is going to rely heavily on natural and organic materials in the living space. From natural wood furnishings to real plants strategically placed around your home, the more natural the item the better. This is one trend that we see sticking around for a while as everyone becomes more sustainability minded to the future.

Accents

This year there’s going to be a focus on Greens to reflect the natural, organic role that many designers are focusing on; as well as Orange! Why orange? It’s contrasting and bold, but most importantly it lifts the mood and adds energy to your surroundings. What’s more is that we’re going to see a comeback of retro accents in everything from art-deco to 70’s nostalgia, which should make for some interesting and exciting updates to the modernist surroundings we’ve all gotten used to.

Even though we only touched on a few trends, you can expect these to be the most obvious. One last thing to touch on is this years Pantone color. For 2022 it’s Pantone 17–3938 Very Peri.

As stated by the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute “The selection of Pantone 17–3938 Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue color family…. Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions.”

We couldn’t agree more and are exited to finally bring in the new year.
